Connection is the Key

Conversations, not confrontations
Conversation is vital. But, there are all kinds of conversations. We need conversations that connect us. Connection is about understanding and being understood, listening to your partner with interest and compassion. It’s listening the way you would listen to a friend, without judgment or criticism. Listen more than you talk. (Remember, you have two ears and one mouth.) Aim for empathy. Empathy is about emotions, not information. Information doesn't create intimacy. Only empathy does that. Empathy is from the heart, not the head. Ask questions that help you understand. Avoid "why" or "what" questions. Those get us into our head. Ask deeper questions. Imagine what it's like for your partner. Try to see from their point of view. Focus more on their experience than their opinions. And, don't try to solve it. Just get it. The point is, don't analyze, don't strategize: Empathize. Don't problem solve; understand. Just get it. Connection happens there and it can turn a broken relationship around.
